Diverse City Exhibition

RIBA-USA has just concluded its national competition focusing on the work that was added to the DiverseCity exhibition from all over the US and reviewed by a panel of judges to identify an overall US winner.
The judges reached a unanimous decision and the winner of the RIBA-USA DiverseCity Competition was announced at a reception at the British Consulate General Los Angeles yesterday evening: This was
Annie Chu AIA, who was the principle collaborator on major additions to UC Riverside of the late Frank Israel.
Annie was described by John Dale, a member of the RIBA-USA judging panel and current President of AIA Los Angeles, as one of America's strongest designers with a tremendous record of achievement both as principal of her own firm, Chu and Gooding and in the promotion of Women and Minority interests within AIA.
As the overall winner of the competition, Annie is eligible to accompany the RIBA-USA delegation to Beijing in May of this year, which has been made possible thanks to the generous support of RIBA-USA's Chinese hosts.
Annie confirmed her acceptance of this award today, February 27th 2004.
Other members of the judging panel were:
Fon Hee
Architect, Philadelphia, PA, designated to the panel by GBIT and CCPIT, Beijing China

RIBA WORLDWIDE AWARDS 2004
Deadline March 8th 2004
The Institute is once again on the look out for award-winning buildings, and for the first time the search has been extended beyond Europe.
Practices throughout the EU are invited to submit projects of architectural excellence for the RIBA Stirling Prize. Projects should exhibit design excellence and have been completed between January 1 2002 and 8 March 2004.
And for the first time, the RIBA is running the RIBA Worldwide
Awards. These will be for buildings outside the EU designed by a UK
practice where at least one principal is an RIBA member. Unlike all
other RIBA awards, these schemes will not be visited, but will be
judged by the RIBA Awards Group with the advice of local experts. For
the RIBA Worldwide Awards, there will be no one overall winner. All
winning schemes will be announced on 16 June 2004.
Tony Chapman, RIBA Head of Awards said: 'More and more RIBA members
are building around the world and the RIBA's awards programmes should
reflect this. Opening up the RIBA Awards to buildings outside the EU
is just the logical extension of extending entries to the EU, which
we did in 1997. I hope that, if we can secure sponsorship, in future
years we will be able to visit schemes so that winners will be
eligible for the Stirling Prize. In the meantime, I'm pleased that
the RIBA Awards are at last beginning to reflect the way Britain
uniquely exports the work of its architects to the rest of the world.'
The closing date for entries is 8 March 2004. Entry forms can be
downloaded from http://www.riba-awards.com

Can having a dinner party with fellow professional friends count? How can you get those vital HSW hours? Where should you go on vacation to maximize your LU opportunities? What are the learning closer to home that you may be earning and not really realizing or recording?
Come earn another LU and have lunch while learning about all the different ways we can continuously learn, develop professionally and be inspired by architecture while enjoying life.
Please confirm your attendance to Kevin Neary kneary@architects.org by 9am on the morning of the 18th so that we can ensure that we have enough sandwiches.
