“BRITISH DESIGN: BRIDGING THE DIVIDE”

Location: Hafele Showroom
This is the first in a lecture series planned for 2006.
Dewhurst MacFarlane will be presenting illustrations of
their work and discussing how engineers, working in close
cooperation with architects, lead to better completed projects.
Their extensive US projects (both with UK and US architects)
give us an opportunity to discuss the various cultural differences
between UK and US Professional Practice and how good practice
can encourage excellence in design.
1.5 LEU’s will be available for this lecture. Make sure
to sign at the door to register your continuing education
credits.
This event is sponsored by Hafele

2006 AGM AT HARVARD CLUB TO FEATURE NELL GWYN BIOGRAPHER
Charles Beauclerk, author of Nell Gwyn: Mistress to a King,
will be the speaker at the annual dinner of St. George’s
Society of New York on Monday 23 January 2006 at the Harvard
Club. The event will follow the Society’s 236th Annual General
Meeting. Mr. Beauclerk, who has ceased to use his honorific
British title of Earl of Burford, is the only son and heir
of the 14th Duke of St. Albans, and a descendant of Nell
Gwyn (in photo) and King Charles II. Nell Gwyn: Mistress
to a King tells the story of one of England’s great folk
heroines. After rising to theater stardom as one of England’s
first female actresses, Nell Gwyn caught the eye of the
newly restored “merry monarch” and their 17-year love affair
played out against the backdrop of the Great Fire of London,
the Great Plague, court scandals, and the constant threat
of political revolution. Call 212-682-6110 or email val.bickel@stgeorgessociety.org
to reserve. Invitations will be mailed.
PRESS RELEASE JANUARY 2006

AIA NY President Welcomes RIBA President to New
York
And festivities continue late into the night
Mark Strauss greeted Jack Pringle at a special roundtable
to discuss issues of common interest. The meeting at the
Center for Architecture on January 12th was initiated by
the RIBA-USA and the NY AIA International Committee. In
his comments, Mark celebrated the many areas of common engagement
of the two professional bodies particularly in the field
of public projects and participation which is this year’s
NY AIA presidential theme. In reply, Jack Pringle thanked
his host and emphasized the many shared values between RIBA
and the AIA. He cited their complimentary commitment towards
urban regeneration, public health, air quality and continuing
education. It was agreed that as the two leading world professional
bodies, the AIA and RIBA have a duty to define global benchmarks
and maintain the highest standards of professional excellence.
The bilateral engagement continued with an evening program
of lectures entitled ‘Bridging the Divide’ held at Hafele
showroom. Packed to capacity on an unusually mild NY evening,
the event celebrated British American synergy and the importance
of collaboration in the field of architecture.
Jonathan Wimpenny, NY RIBA-USA Chair, introduced a fast
moving program where Tim Macfarlane (Dewhurst Macfarlane
Engineers) grasped the nettle of what effective collaboration
really means in practice. Richly illustrated with examples
from his firm’s experience, he discussed cultural, international
and historic stereotypes. Citing preoccupations with Cost,
Time and Quality, normally associated with the UK, the US
and Japan respectively, he goaded the audience to consider
how we may address these issues simultaneously if we would
only dare more often to bridge the divide.
Lucy Bullivant introduced the audience to her new book “British
Built – UK Architects’ Rising Generation (Princeton Architectural
Press) and further amplified Tim’s message.
Simon Alford and Paul Monaghan of AHMM gave additional substance
to the theme of the event with reference to their work as
illustrated in Lucy’s book. They demonstrated how their
academic principles (they both teach at the Bartlett School
London) are now being transformed into meaningful public
works.
