Architecture for India: A lecture by architect B. V. Doshi, FAIA

Balkrishna Doshi, an Indian architect, educator and planner worked with Le Corbusier in Paris from 1951 to 1954 as senior designer, and then in India to supervise Corbusier’s projects in Ahmedabad and Chandigarh. In 1955 he also established the Vastu-Shilpa Foundation for Studies and Research in Environmental Design, known for pioneering work in low-cost housing and city planning. He maintains an office, Vastu-Shilpa Consultants, in Ahmedabad. This lecture will explore spatial concepts and architectural themes in his work while examining contradictions and challenges posed by India's unique cultural milieu, rapid urbanization and growth. The presentation will include institutional projects, housing and large-scale urban design and planning projects. St George’s and the Pilgrim’s Society join together to celebrate America’s 400th anniversary of the commemorative visit of the tall ship Godspeed, a recreation of one of the three dhips that brought America’s first permanent English settlers to Jamestown in 1607.

The exhibit will feature a very environmentally-friendly lightweight webbed
steel frame, metal roof, Bale walls with Clay exterior and Lime interior
plasters. Some of the other features displayed will be PV (Solar Electric)
Solar Thermal (hot water) and radiant floor heating systems, Sustainable
flooring, recycled doors and windows, and much more.
