"Mediating Modernism" published in the US by Routledge

Watch out for Andrew Higgott's new book which has been recently published in the US! Mediating Modernism has developed from research in to British architectural culture and modernism. It focuses on the crucial role played by the architectural media in creating architectural discourse, and its consequent effects. British architecture of the 20th century has by and large not been subjected to have radically re-thought the construct of modernism, but not in relation to Britain. That there is an interest in Britain is evident, however, with several new books published dealing with the Smithsons, Lubetkin, Price, Archigram and Brutalism. See: Mediating-Modernism

Competition News
Projects from South Korea, Israel, the USA and China among others won prestigious RIBA International Awards in 2006, with more entries than ever before. The RIBA continues to recognize members building outside the EU in 2007 with the RIBA awards programme: as well as being an achievement in their own right presented at a gala dinner in London in June, RIBA International Awards are considered for the prestigious Lubetkin Prize.

We would like to remind you that RIBA members from the United States with a project completed between 1 January 2005 and 1 March 2007 situated anywhere in the world outside the European Union, can enter for the chance to have winning schemes receive international media coverage and profile, and be considered for the prestigious Lubetkin Prize. CONGRATULATIONS TO NICHOLAS GRIMSHAW'S RECENT COMPETITION WIN

Earlier this month, a winner was chosen from among the 32 architect-development teams that made submissions. The winner, PRDG-comprised of the Phipps Houses,Dattner Architects, and Jonathan Rose Companies, and Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners presented a proposal called Via Verde, which will consist of 202 mixed-income residential units, retail and community spaces, and parking. The development, which is aiming for LEED Gold status, is cleverly organized around a multi-functional garden that begins as a street-level courtyard and plaza then spirals upwards as a series roof gardens before culminating in a sky terrace. Enhanced ventilation, individual control of heating and cooling, and sun screens are just some of the energy-efficient features that will help to reduce utility bills and improve indoor air quality
