Presentation: Enlightenment: Renovating Louis Kahn's Yale University Art Gallery

Location: The Municipal Art Society's Urban Center 457 Madison Avenue at 51st Street New York, NY 10022

Architects from Polshek Partnership (Duncan R. Hazard AIA, Partner; Steven C. Peppas, Associate Partner; Gary L. Anderson AIA and Lloyd L. DesBrisay AIA, Associates) will present the firm’s 2000-2006 architectural renovation of the Yale University Art Gallery by Louis Kahn. Opened in 1953, the building is considered to be Kahn’s first masterpiece and is acclaimed for its open space, bold geometry, use of natural and artificial lighting, and engineering innovations. The presentation will focus on planning and renovation strategies to correct the building’s fundamental issues of thermal expansion and interior condensation, including the replacement of the building’s signature window wall.

Macro to Micro: Grimshaw in New York presents the body of groundbreaking projects completed by this pioneering architecture firm in the past 25 years. Macro to Micro features the newest work being produced by Grimshaw's New York office, including the plans for the highly-anticipated expansion of the Queens Museum of Art. Recent work on the Experimental Media & Performing Arts Center in Troy, New York, the Fulton Street Transit Center in Manhattan and the Museo del Acero (Museum of Steel) in Monterrey, Mexico will be shown in conjunction with the complete array of new street furniture for New York - bus shelters, public restrooms and newsstands.

AFGG advisory board member Wendell Garrett will discuss “Raising Georgian Spirits: Drink and Debauchery in the Age of Reason.” He will describe the world of Adam, Chippendale, Reynolds, and Baskerville, in which Englishmen of good breeding were obsessed with high-stakes gambling and cruel blood sports. During the period when England grew from a small influential maritime state to become the leading empire in the world, luxury and elegance existed side by side with debauchery and riot. - Wendell Garrett is a senior vice president at Sotheby’s and an expert on Federal-style architecture, as well as a frequent appraiser on Antiques Roadshow. July 7- July 28, 2007 Director of the Program: Mosette Broderick, Clinical Associate Professor, Director, Urban Design and Architecture Studies Program, Fine Arts. Since architecture is by definition three-dimensional and site specific, experiencing it first hand is a must. This course introduces students to the history of Britain's abundant architectural traditions, while at the same time addressing issues such as the preservation and presentation of an architectural heritage, infrastructure, transportation, adaptive re-use, ecological concerns and other topics related to urban planning and architectural practice.
