Zaha Takes Michigan!

Michigan State University has chosenZaha Hadid, to design
its new $26-million Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum in East
Lansing. MSU unveiled Hadid's design, showing a sharply angular,
low-slung horizontal building with a glass and aluminum skin
and an outdoor sculpture garden. The 41,000-square-foot building
would have three levels, including a basement, and would be
designed with several environmentally friendly factors. Hadid
described her concept as a series of trapezoidal gallery spaces
with pleated or louvered exteriors that criss-cross in multiple
configurations that allow for a series of unexpected interior
spaces. The louvered exterior also allows for control of natural
light. The museum is scheduled to open in 2010. It is to include
about 26,000 square feet of gallery space and will be built
on Grand River Avenue at the Collingwood entrance at the site
of the former Paolucci Building on MSU's campus. That building
was demolished in December.
