New Worldview Perspectives On Architecture & Urbanism

Worldview: Perspectives on Architecture and Urbanism from Around the Globe is a web-based project of the Architectural League that looks at the world’s cities through the eyes of young architects who live and work in them. The project was inaugurated in late 2002 with a report on Caracas, Venezuela, and continues with several new reports each year, concentrating on cities often overlooked by the mainstream architectural press.

Young Architects Forum Foresight lectures

The Architectural League’s Young Architects Forum is an annual competition and series of lectures and exhibitions organized by the Architectural League and its Young Architects Committee. The Forum was established to recognize specific works of high quality and to encourage the exchange of ideas among young people who might otherwise not have a forum.
Participants in the program are chosen through a portfolio competition that is juried by distinguished architects, artists and critics, and the Young Architects Committee. The committee, a group selected each year from past participants in the Young Architects Forum, is responsible for developing the program's theme and selecting competition jurors. Open to designers ten years or less out of school, the competition draws entrants from around North America. The lecture series and exhibition by winners of the competition provide a lively public forum for the discussion of their work and ideas. Winners' designs will also be illustrated in a catalogue to be published by Princeton Architectural Press.

"NOW WHAT ARCHITECTURE?" SYMPOSIUM AT THE GUGGENHEIM
Two-Day Symposium on Contemporary Architecture and Urban Design
Venue: Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Peter B. Lewis Theater in the Sackler Center for Arts Education
Organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in collaboration with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation on the occasion of Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward

Dates: Thu, May 14, 4 p.m. and Fri, May 15, 10:30 a.m.
In his 1931 Kahn Lecture at Princeton University, Frank Lloyd Wright posed the seminal question: "Now what architecture?" Over the course of his seventy-year long career, Wright taught his contemporaries how to connect time, place, and people through architecture. Today, fifty years after his death in 1959 and coinciding with opening events for the exhibition Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward, Wright's question forms the basis for a two-day symposium that will feature debates among scholars, architects, designers, and cultural critics from around the world. Rather than look at Wright's work as a stylistic school to be revived or imitated, Now What Architecture? hopes to transform Wright's lessons on the simplicity of space into 21st century potentialities by exploring the ways in which well-designed spaces-from personal spaces, shared spaces to public spaces-can shape our everyday lives.

“An Architectural Walk along the Grand Concourse”
In 1923, Governor Alfred E. Smith called the Bronx “the most striking example of urban developmentin the United States.” After nearly a century of grandeur, decay, and restoration, the Concourse, now celebrating its centennial year, is still home to neoclassical, Moorish and Art Deco gems for which it became famous. Sam Goodman, Urban Planner for the Bronx Borough President’s Office, will offer a mix of architectural and social history, as well as exclusive access to the interiors of nearly all the important buildings along the Concourse. Meet in the lobby of the Bronx Museum of the Arts (1040 Grand Concourse at 165th Street) at 9:45 am. Coffee will be provided by the Bronx Museum. The tour will get under way at 10:00 am sharp and will last approximately two hours minimum. $10 for ICA&CA members and employees of professional member firms. $20 for the general public. Space is limited; (212) 730-9646, ext. 109.

INFORMATION MODELS IN CONTEMPORARY DESIGN
In the last 25 years, the broad use of computer software has revolutionized the way architectural design proposals are generated and documented. Much of this work has occurred in either visualization or formal speculation - largely academic concerns; or in conventional documentation and management – largely professional preoccupations. This separation, often articulated as one between theory and practice, becomes amplified between architects and those that build their design proposals. Traditionally, this translation between architect and builder has invited breaks, or gaps, in what should be a continuous and interrelated process of design translation and building actualization.

GOT LICENSE? ROUNTABLE DISCUSSION ON BECOMING AN ARCHITECT

This program seeks to create a dialogue about the IDP process, licensure and recent changes in the taking the registration exam, that may have an effect on the number of people receiving their license. There will be an opportunity to hear from an NCARB representative. We will be discussing the experiences of a variety of emerging professionals at different parts of their careers: post-graduation; close to completion of IDP; taking the exam; and post-licensure/mentoring. The young practitioners behind these “case studies” have followed different methods to licensure such as working in architecture firms versus pursuing alternate career paths and attending accredited and non-accredited universities. The program is also intended to be a mini-summit/ focus group, a forum for Chapter members to discuss resources and already available and ones needed to promote licensure in NYS.

Paintings from the Reign of Victoria: The Royal Holloway Collection, London
This exhibition includes sixty works from the Holloway collection that exemplify a range of themes in mid-Victorian art. At the Yale Center for British Art
Thomas Holloway (1800-1883), a self-made multi-millionaire, purchased a group of "modern" paintings that were the crowning gift of his generous endowment of a college for women, opened by Queen Victoria in 1886. This exhibition includes sixty works from the Holloway collection that exemplify a range of themes in mid-Victorian art.
