STRAGEGIC CITIES
Why some cities can build their visions, why most don’t
When: 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM MONDAY, JUNE 1
Where: At The Center for architecture
Internationally-acclaimed urbanist Jeb Brugmann presents the central thesis of his new book Welcome to the Urban Revolution. As the world organizes into a global urban system, very local development outcomes rapidly create new global opportunities or crises. The significance of urban place has never been greater. But the multiplication of influences on local development through that global city system also reduces the efficacy of jurisdictions and local planning. Exploring two decades of urban best practices, Brugmann proposes a new practice—“urban strategy”—and uses its elements to explain why cities like Barcelona, Chicago, Curitiba, and Vancouver have been so successful in shaping their growth and/or overcoming local crises.

BOOK TALK AND SIGNING

Scott Johnson, author of TALL BUILDINGS; Imagining the Skscraper
The skyscraper, whatever it may be as physical fact, looms large in our lives and as a figment of our imaginations carries with it ideas of wealth, ambition, and dominance. The image of the skyscraper has been made and remade in the news, in literature and film, and now in all forms of our now global media. Paradoxically, as the building type continues to become more complex and is designed to address fundamentally different cultural conditions, the image, that is to say, the idea, of the skyscraper in the public mind seems to become simpler, more omnipresent, and more consumable. Organized by: The Skyscraper Museum
Location: The Skyscraper Museum 39 Battery Place, NY, NY 10280
Price: FREE Telephone/Fax: 212.945.6324/212.732.3039

This exhibition looks at four works by the French sculptor Jules Dalou executed during his British period. Living in exile in London in the 1870s, Dalou found his niche among the English aristocracy with the support of the Countess of Carlisle at Castle Howard, creating a series of intimate statuettes on the theme of modern womanhood. Co-organized by the Yale Center for British Art and the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds.
