Lecture on Adam Smith – “Moral Leadership and the
Economic Imperative.”
The legacy of Adam Smith, arguably one of the most influential
members of the Scottish Enlightenment of the mid to late 18th
century, resonates as loudly as ever. His writing, some 250
years old, is the basis for many contemporaneous economic
assumptions.
The financial crisis and subsequent global recession have
resulted in a surge of interest in Adam Smith’s original works.
In The Theory of Moral Sentiments he first introduces the
term “invisible hand” and accentuates the value of human social
interaction.

When you try to build the City of Tomorrow … Today
Film Presentation, Followed by Round-Table Discussion
AIA CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS: 2 LU HSW/SD
Note: This program will satisfy the new AIA requirement for
Sustainable Design credit.
INTRODUCTION TO THE FILM:
This film is the saga of a LEED Gold apartment building, built
in the seedy, working-class neighborhood of South Boston.
The old-school construction workers had never heard of green
building or “getting LEED points” ever before. Viola! You
get to witness the education of an army of constriction workers
who made the design professionals and development teams
dreams of a highly sophisticated, green building into a reality.
And, oh yes, the road to LEED Gold was littered with major
obstacles which had to be overcome, in order to successfully
complete the building. A number of very poignant issues, related
to the green building and constructability are addressed in
this 80-minute film. Then attendees get to enjoy a “heated”
round-table discussion made up of prominent figures in the
bourgeoning Tri-State Green Building Community. If you wish
to attend, please call Peter D’Amato at 516-746-2002
or email your request to him peter@thewindownetwork.com

LECTURE: Stories about Squares
Where: At The Center for Architecture
An Illustrated talk by Robert F Gatje, FAIA, based upon his
new book Great Public Squares, An Architect's Selection.
Based upon six years of research, visits, and composition,
Gatje has chosen 40 squares in western Europe and America
for inclusion in his book. They range in size from Bernini’s
gigantic space in front of St Peter’s, to a small market cross-roads
on the island of Rhodes. One was developed from the outline
of an early Roman circus, while another “western” plaza was
completed only in 1988. They represent everything from cold-blooded
merchandizing to hot-blooded revolution and include everyone’s
favorite plaza in Venice along with another that most people
don’t think of as a square.
In order to compare one to another and judge their relative
success, squares must be defined. Bob will summarize the standards
proposed by Camillo Sitte in 19th Century Austria and those
by Paul Zucker at the New School.
The point is to stimulate fellow-architects who will be designing
new squares in the future and fellow citizens who will need
them.
Robert F. Gatje, FAIA, is an architect with 50 years experience
in domestic and international practice. Formerly a partner
of Marcel Breuer and of Richard Meier, Gatje served as President
of the New York Chapter of the AIA from 1975 to 1976.

Fair Housing
Where: NYIT Manhattan campus 1855 Broadway New York, NY 10023-7692
(at Broadway)
This presentation will showcase lessons learned as a result
of real world-experience regarding a fair housing expert for
the plaintiff's attorneys in the largest case filed to date
against a top five REIT for widespread national fair housing
violations. The Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988, among
other federal accessibility laws, requires that newly constructed
multifamily residential buildings be designed and constructed
to provide access to people with disabilities. A violation
of these federal laws perpetuates discriminatory housing practices.

LECTURE: Current Work: Sauerbruch Hutton
Where: The Great Hall, The Cooper Union, 7 East 7th Street
Louisa Hutton and Matthias Sauerbruch founded Sauerbruch Hutton
in the late eighties in London; in 1993 an office was opened
in Berlin, where the firm is currently based. Louisa Hutton
will discuss the firm's sustainable approach to design in
current and recent projects. Noted built work includes the
Brandhorst Museum in Munich and the Federal Environmental
Agency in Dessau.Sauerbruch Hutton describes its design approach
as "the enjoyment of the sensuality of space and material,
as well as the mastery of up-to-date technology--combined
with the intelligent use of existing resources of every kind"
and explores the "extent to which sustainable design
can be fully embedded in urban and architectural concepts
and be translated into sensual and stimulating spaces."
Sponsored by: Co-sponsored by The Irwin S. Chanin School of
Architecture of The Cooper Union. AIA and New York State continuing
education credits are available. This program is made possible,
in part, by public funds from the National Endowment for the
