RIBA-USA San Francisco Chapter OPENING
NIGHT!
On Thursday April 15th the San Francisco Chapter of RIBA-USA
had an opening Launch Event in the Consul General Residence.
A Special thanks to the generous hospitality of the British
Consulate-General San Francisco, to Julian Evans, Consul General
and to the staff for opening their home for this auspicious
occasion. Mr. Evans was kind enough to give a brief talk regarding
the British Consulate and their current events then handing
the proceedings to Chad Overway, Chair of the San Francisco
Chapter, where he expressed his gratitude to the Consul General
and to AURP, Davis Landgon and tbd Consultants for their corporate
sponsorship.
The event gave all the attendees an opportunity to socialize
with fellow colleagues, to meet the local RIBA members and
to broaden their professional network within the community,
all within a most impressive setting. For the Chapter, it
was record turnout mostly because of the prestige of being
a small part of the British community in San Francisco. The
Chapter has received so many accolades. It truly was an evening
enjoyed by all.
As our Chapter continues to grow we hope that there will
be opportunities for us to participate in as well as sponsor
events that help promote the exposure of British architecture
in the Bay Area.
For more information about RIBA-USA San Francisco Chapter’s
membership, current events and corporate sponsorships please

Romantic Gardens: Nature, Art & Landscape
Design At The Morgan Library
This exhibition will show how the Romantic Movement in art
and literature influenced styles of landscape design in England,
France, Germany, and America. The Morgan has drawn on its
wide-ranging collections to document this important episode
in cultural history with books and prints containing splendid
views of European gardens, many in color and large formats.
Also on display will be master drawings, literary manuscripts,
and first editions of works by Emerson, Wordsworth, Goethe,
and other authors whose writings helped to form the Romantic
sensibility and to redefine the relationship between man and
nature. The Morgan’s extraordinary holdings in this
area will be supplemented by a selection of loaned objects,
including the original competition entry for Central Park
and a number of rare books from a private collection. An accompanying
catalogue will recount the relationship between Romanticism
and landscape design in greater detail. Romanticism’s
reverence for nature and theories of picturesque design influenced
the creation of public parks in ways that will be of special
interest to residents of New York and city dwellers everywhere.
The conception and contents of the exhibition and its accompanying
catalogue have been significantly enriched through the participation
of the Foundation for Landscape Studies.

Palladio and His Legacy: A Transatlantic Journey
At the Morgan Library
Palladio and His Legacy: A Transatlantic Journey features
thirty-one original Palladio drawings from the Royal Institute
of British Architects. These exquisite drawings, which were
exhibited only once before in America and never in New York,
will be on view to the public for the first time in over thirty
years. They are being presented with rare architectural texts
to illustrate the journey from Italy to North America of Palladio's
design principles of proportion, harmony, and beauty.
Palladio's work has significantly impacted American architecture
from colonial times to the present day. Focusing on the artist's
original drawings and following the trajectory of his ideas,
the show also traces the story of American Palladianism. The
drawings are supported by numerous architectural models. Three
large examples—the Pantheon, Villa Rotunda, and Jefferson's
unrealized design for the White House—programmatically
illustrate the journey from Rome to America. Smaller models
along with rare architectural texts and pattern books, through
which Palladio's ideas were primarily transmitted, reinforce
the themes of the exhibition.
The exhibition is organized by the Royal Institute of British
Architects Trust, London, in association with the Centro Internazionale
di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio, Vicenza, and The
Morgan Library & Museum, New York. Models by Timothy Richards.
The exhibition is made possible by the generous support
of the Regione del Veneto, Dainese, RIBA Library Trust Fund,
Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, British Architectural Library
Trust, Samuel H. Kress Foundation, Center for Palladian Studies
in America, William T. Kemper Foundation, and Sir John Soane's
Museum Foundation.
