British Engineers Win Coveted NY Engineer's Award
On March 27th 2010 Jonathan Wimpenny was honored
to represent RIBA-USA at the American Council of Engineering
Companies of New York ‘s annual Engineering
Excellence Awards Black Tie Dinner Dance in the Grand
Ballroom of the Waldorf=Astoria. BUT particularly delighted
when the UK engineers, Dewhurst MacFarlane
took home the prize for their work in New York on the TKTS
Building. The awards were followed by dinner and dancing to
the music of the Hank Lane Orchestra.

The TKTS building reflects a long collaboration between Perkins
Eastman and the world’s leading glass specialists, Dewhurst
McFarlane and Partners. Its visual elegance belies tremendous
structural complexity: 28-foot, laminated glass stringer beams
support red-tinted glass treads between glass load-bearing
walls—all stronger than a comparable structure in steel.
Cutting-edge technology was integrated throughout the lighting
and mechanical systems as well. LED arrays beneath the steps
create buoyant luminescence underfoot. Five geothermal wells
circulate a water/glycol mix 450 feet below Broadway and back
again through heat exchangers that cool the interior in summer,
warm it in winter and even keep the staircase ice free.

Columbian Architecture for Education
In 2004, then Mayor Sergio Fajardo embarked on a project he
called “Medellin, the best educated” to combat social inequality
and violence through an ambitious master plan of infrastructures
and various programs connected with quality education and
social urban planning, building educational and community
facilities with a supportive infrastructure to bring social
stability and hope to Medellin’s poor neighborhoods. The results
offer us a new and inspiring look at how civic minded architecture
ought to look and how cities ought to operate

Our Cities, Ourselves: The Future of Transportation in Urban
Life explores the creation of better cities through better
transportation and demonstrates what is possible when we design
our cities for ourselves.
By 2030, sixty percent of the world’s population will live
in cities. As cities become increasingly dense, personal automobiles
will become less and less feasible transport options. Sustainable
transportation will be the key to the health of our cities,
our own health, and the health of the environment.

Guggenheim - Malevich in Focus

Kazimir Malevich (b. 1878, near Kiev, Ukraine; d. 1935, Leningrad),
one of the most celebrated Russian artists of his generation,
is recognized for his innovations in Suprematism, an abstract
style that sought to capture the essence of color and form.
Before arriving at this point around 1914, however, he experimented
with various styles such as Realism and Impressionism, as
well as more current developments in contemporary art. He
was especially influenced by Cubism, characterized by the
breaking down of form and space, and Italian Futurism, which
sought to simultaneously convey shifting forms and the dynamism
of the modern city. Malevich had encountered these modernist
movements through his active engagement with the Russian avant-garde.
This intimate presentation of six paintings spans a ten-year
period and illustrates Malevich’s path toward a truly original
mode of artistic expression. Moreover, the works share a unique
history: each was included in the retrospective exhibition
of Malevich’s work in Poland and Germany in 1927 and the works
have not been exhibited together since that time.
