Palladio and His Legacy: A Transatlantic Journey
Exhibition at the National Building Museum
This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see some of the most important drawings in the world of architecture—thirty-one, 16th-century works from the hand of the Italian Renaissance master Andrea Palladio. These illustrations link the splendor of ancient Rome to the power and wealth of the Venetian Republic and, ultimately, to the symbols of our American democracy

Adapting Business to Succeed – (all day seminar)
Center for Architecture, LaGuardia Place
As architects, builders, and product manufacturers we are always subject to many forces and influences. Economic cycles, architectural design trends, environmental concerns, codes and regulations, technology advances, education of new professionals, and current events all shape our industry and the buildings that we make.
The economy has forced us to be more efficient in our design and construction. New emphases on energy efficiency, new design and coordination tools in building information modeling, new construction products that reduce waste and improve the indoor environment ¬– all of these and more come to our attention every day, and have the potential to make us better at what we do. Adaptation is the keyword that links us to the future.

MOMA - Counter Space: Design and the Modern Kitchen

Counter Space explores the twentieth-century transformation of the kitchen and highlights MoMA’s recent acquisition of an unusually complete example of the iconic “Frankfurt Kitchen,” designed in 1926–27 by the architect Grete Schütte-Lihotzky. In the aftermath of World War I, thousands of these kitchens were manufactured for public-housing estates being built around the city of Frankfurt-am-Main in Germany. Schütte-Lihotzky’s compact and ergonomic design, with its integrated approach to storage, appliances, and work surfaces, reflected a commitment to transforming the lives of ordinary people on an ambitious scale.

The Shore Thing: A Practical Seminar on Shoring Methods and Case Studies for Historic Buildings

Join us for a special seminar examining shoring methods and case studies from work on historic buildings. Techniques are improving all the time and architects should understand many of these techniques to have a fuller knowledge of preserving and restoring buildings.
In recent years, with an increase in construction and demolition across the city, New York has witnessed several unfortunate losses of historic structures due to improper stabilization and shoring. Understanding the unique circumstances surrounding the structural make-up of historic buildings and how to properly undertake shoring for these buildings is crucial to their continued preservation.

What next for Coney Island?
Thurs Sept 30th  2010
The presenters will address the question of how Coney Island’s rich history could factor into its redevelopment.  How can we build a 21st-century Coney Island that successfully capitalizes on Coney’s heritage? Given the situation of several historic buildings in Coney Island, this conversation could not be more timely.  It will be a fantastic discussion, and we hope that you will join us.
The event will be free, though registration is strongly encouraged. Click here to register (and forward to your friends!).
