This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see some of the most important drawings in the world of architecture—thirty-one, 16th-century works from the hand of the Italian Renaissance master Andrea Palladio. These illustrations link the splendor of ancient Rome to the power and wealth of the Venetian Republic and, ultimately, to the symbols of our American democracy

Guastavino Vaulting; The Art of Structural Tile: Book Release
Center for Architecture
Since the time of ancient Rome, architects, engineers, and builders have struggled with the problem of building domed ceilings over large spaces. No one was more skilled at this than the Rafael Guastavino family, a father and son team of Spanish immigrants who came from Barcelona to oversee the construction of thousands of spectacular thin-tile vaults across the United States between the 1880s and the 1950s. Their patented vaulting techniques made it possible for Beaux-Arts architects such as McKim, Mead and White to create the bold, broad spaces that made them famous.
Guastavino Vaulting: The Art of Structural Tile, Princeton Architectural Press, October 2010.  Books available for purchase at the event.

Atelier Bow Wow: Lecture on current work

Yoshiharu Tsukamoto Architectural Behaviorology Moderated by Anthony Vidler
Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, co-founder of Tokyo-based Atelier Bow-Wow, will explore the concept of "architectural behaviorology" in the firm's recent and current work. "Behavior," as defined by Tsukamoto, can include human behavior inside and outside of buildings; physical phenomena produced by different environmental elements such as light, air, heat, wind, and water; and a building's behavior in its surroundings. "Architectural behaviorology" aims to understand the behaviors of those different elements in order to synthesize them, optimizing their performance in their specific contexts and suggesting a new idea of the "organic" in architecture.

New Practices 2010 Winner Presentation: Easton Combs
@ Center for Architecture
This presentation by EASTON + COMBS is be the second of seven events featuring the winners of the 2010 New Practices competition.
New Practices New York 2010 is the third juried portfolio competition and exhibition in a new biennial tradition sponsored by the New Practices Committee of the AIA New York Chapter. It serves as a platform for recognizing and promoting new, innovative and emerging architecture firms within New York City that have undertaken unique and commendable strategies - both in the projects they undertake and the practices they have established. Distinguishing this award from others given to new and young practices is the attention focused on how the winning firms' practices have been uniquely shaped to better facilitate and exploit the type of projects that are undertaken.
For the first time in the competition's history, the qualification for entry (firm must be located within the five boroughs and must be five-years-old or less) has been expanded to include firms without a registered architect.
From the 65 submitted portfolios, jury members Toshiko Mori, FAIA (Toshiko Mori Architect), Joe MacDonald, Assoc. AIA (Urban A&O), William Menking (The Architect's Newspaper), Guy Nordenson (Guy Nordenson and Associates) and Galia Solomonoff, AIA (Solomonoff Architecture Studio) selected 7 firms who embody the spirit of the New Practices New York competition:
