Fitch Forum & Symposium: 45 Years of Preservation Law
Preservation law can play a big role in decisions about Modern buildings. On February 5, preservation experts from across the country will gather to present their perspectives on preservation law at the 2011 Fitch Forum, a daylong symposium organized by the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation. Keynote and panel discussion topics include: “Preservation Law in 2010: Is the glass half full, or half empty?” “A Tale of Three Cities: Challenges to municipal preservation laws across the country,” “New York City’s Landmarks Law: Perpetually young or showing its age?” and “Looking Ahead: Challenges and opportunities for New York City and beyond.” These discussions are a great way to learn about the intricacies of preservation regulation at the local and national levels.

Exhibition: Kevin Roche: Architecture as Environment
Homage to legendary architect and Pritzker Prize laureate Kevin Roche dominates the calendar at Yale School of Architecture, as the Gallery of Paul Rudolph Hall opens a retrospective exhibition of his work, “Architecture as Environment.” To complement the exhibition, the school is hosting a two-day symposium, “Thinking Big: Diagrams, Mediascapes, and Megastructures” (February 17–19), at which architectural historians, theoreticians and practitioners will explore architecture as an interconnected part of a larger whole, an approach identified with Roche. A key event of this symposium will be a conversation on February 18 between Roche and architectural critic Paul Goldberger, a Yale alum.

Book Talk “The Encyclopedia of New York City: Second Edition”
at the Skyscraper Museum, 30 Battery Place
Exhaustive in its range of information about the five boroughs, the first edition of The Encyclopedia of New York City (1995) became an instant classic, earning worldwide acclaim, awards for reference excellence, and selling out its first printing before it was officially published. But in the ever-evolving New York City, change is the constant. The new edition covers both the unpredictable events of 9/11 and the unlikely three-term mayoralty of a billionaire businessman, and documents the slower shifts of urban regeneration of many city neighborhoods. The revised edition includes 800 new entries, with new material that includes broader coverage of subject areas and new maps and illustrations. Virtually all existing entries - spanning architecture, politics, business, sports, the arts, and more - have been updated to reflect the impact of the past two decades. Exhibition of Ezra Stoller’s Photography

Ezra Stoller is the preeminent American architectural photographer. His work defines mid-century modernism. An exhibition of Stoller's photographs includes iconic images of major buildings such as Fallingwater, the Guggenheim Museum, the Seagram Building, and the TWA Terminal. In addition, there are lesser-known structures including residential projects, many seen for the first time. This exhibition provides a fresh look at Stoller's masterful eye for describing architecture and creating important documents of social history

Passive House: TOWN & COUNTRY
at the Center for Architecture, La Guardia Place.
The passive house standard embodies today's highest benchmark for energy efficiency and conservation. A cutting-edge approach to design and construction, the passive house standard drastically reduces the amount of energy required to operate a building (for instance, it results in a 90% reduction in energy required for heating). Originally developed in Germany, the passive house energy standard is being implemented with ever-greater frequency in the United States. Highlighting the work of two NYC architects, Passive House: Town & Country will illustrate how the passive house concept can be applied with equal and remarkable success in residential projects in both the urban and rural settings. The need and knowledge are out there--there has never been a better time to "go passive"! The event will begin with a 15-20 minute introduction to the passive house concept for those new to the topic by New York Passive House. This will begin at 6:30 pm and "Passive House: Town & Country" will begin at 7:00 pm. A Q&A will follow.

Tele-Conference for all Board Members – Agenda will be distributed prior to the meeting
Monday, 28th February 2011 - 6.00pm – 8.00pm
Design through Dialogue: A Panel Discussion with Architects and Clients

at the Center for Architecture
Completed projects receive more public attention than the process of their creation and so the myth that architects design buildings alone lives on. In fact, architects work with a great many others and the relationships that develop, particularly with clients, have a significant impact on design. Design through Dialogue (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., March 2010) explores the relationship between client and architect through the lens of four overlapping activities that occur during any project: relating, talking, exploring and transforming.
Three sets of architects and clients featured in the book will participate in a panel discussion. Book signing to follow with authors Karen A. Franck and Teresa von Sommaruga Howard.

The MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House recently premiered the first half of a two-part exhibition, entitled 91 92 93 . The exhibition, presented in January and May, will examine the creation of an aesthetic idiom through key projects of the early 1990s with the migration of artists from New York to Los Angeles. Part one of the exhibition serves as a performative aspect, with the residence of Warren Niesluchowski, longtime assistant to Alanna Heiss of P.S. 1 in New York City. His piece will continue exploring concepts first presented in Simon Leung’s installation Warren Piece (in the 1970s) –which will be shown in part two of the exhibit–as a modern chapter in the enigmatic figure’s life.

Las Vegas Studio: Images from the Archives of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown
Graham Foundation Madlener House, 4 West Burton Place Chicago, IL, 60610 USA
In 1968, American architects Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Steven Izenour, with students from Yale University, embarked on a groundbreaking investigation of the Las Vegas Strip. Their fresh way of looking at the city extended the categories of the ordinary, the ugly, and the social into architecture. Their use of photography and film as a research methodology became as revolutionary as their findings, which were published in the legendary 1972 book, Learning from Las Vegas. Offering great insight into the creation of this groundbreaking publication, the exhibition, Las Vegas Studio: Images from the Archives of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown presents original research materials from the archives of Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates, Inc.
