George Baird and Mary McLeod in Conversation
Public Space: Cultural/Political Theory; Street Photography
In this new book, George Baird describes the decline of confidence in the idea of “public space” on the part of a surprising number of prominent architectural designers and theorists in recent years. Arguing against this tendency, he re-asserts the importance of a commitment to the public, and proposes an alternative approach that begins from the phenomenology and politics of the individual body in the world. Baird gives relevant architectural and urban examples and illustrates his ideas through archival street photographs. Baird will be joined by Mary McLeod for a conversation about his book and the future of public space.

Glass House: A Play
Architecture as the protagonist? The Center of Architecture is hosting a staged reading of the new play “Glass House” by Bob Morris. The synopsis: Anthony is an architect who idolizes mid-century Modern design. When he and his wife, Abby, move into a glass house in the suburbs, Anthony’s obsession with order surfaces as his persona begins to shatter. The play features giants of design who comment on how style, substance and organization affect our daily lives. The great architect Philip Johnson makes a special ghostly appearance. The play is directed by Hal Brooks, and features Rachel Feldman, Kim Howard, Fajer Al Kaisi & Joe Pallister.

Green Building & Birds: Focus on San Francisco
You’re invited to a special presentation

Green Building initiatives tend to focus on energy and material resources; however features of building design can also impact biodiversity. An issue of growing concern is the large number bird fatalities caused by glass. Recent efforts, such as San Francisco’s Standards for Bird-Safe Buildings, and a LEED pilot credit, “Bird Collision Deterrence”, are designed to reduce the threat of glass in the built environment. Please join the RIBA-USA SF Chapter, AIASF, American Bird Conservancy and the San Francisco Planning Department for an open discussion of this topic.
Presenters are: Dr. Christine Sheppard Christine Sheppard earned her B.A. and Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University. Interest in the issue led to Dr. Sheppard to join the board of the Bird-safe Glass Foundation as science advisor, in 2007. She is also conducting basic research into quantifying the effectiveness of different materials and patterns in preventing bird collisions.
Deborah Laurel Deborah Laurel is a partner at Prendergast Laurel Architects, a New York City based firm that has a primary focus on public projects. PLA was selected to participate in Mayor Bloomberg’s Design Excellence Initiative.Erika Lovejoy Erika Lovejoy currently serves as a Senior Environmental Planner with the San Francisco Planning Department and is one of the primary authors of San Francisco’s Standards for Bird-Safe Buildings.
