NEW YORK  (Back to top)

Exhibition:
Luminous Modernism: Scandinavian Art Comes to America, 1912
Scandinavia House. 58 Park Avenue (@ 38th Street) New York City, NY, USA
Luminous Modernism looks back at the first exhibition organized by The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF), a 1912 survey of contemporary Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish painting that traveled to Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, and Toledo following its debut in New York City. The exhibition had an enormous impact in and beyond the cities to which it traveled. Reviewers used words like “radical” to describe the work it contained (it was the first U.S. presentation of Edvard Munch’s paintings); artists like Marsden Hartley were strongly affected by it; and in each of those four cities it drew some of the largest audiences of any art exhibition up to that time. Although it was eclipsed just two months after it closed by the arrival of the more radical Armory Show, the ASF-organized exhibition and its reception constitute a significant chapter in the history of art and culture in America.

Evolving Models for Housing and Senior Care in New York City

At the Center for Architecture, La Guardia Place
Over the next twenty-five years, the number of New York City residents over age 65 is expected to grow by nearly 50%. And as more of us live longer the increase in the number of frail elderly, primarily those over 85, will be even greater. Where seniors will live and what kinds of residential services they will need are therefore vital topics for the city’s future. Often there is no clear-cut line between medical models and independent living models for senior housing, thus there are semantic overlaps such as “nursing homes” or the more independent “assisted” or “enhanced” apartment living.
This session will look at the evolution of two of the city’s established forms of residential senior environments. Starting in the 1970’s, affordable apartment buildings with small independent units and limited common spaces were built by community-based sponsors in all five boroughs through the federally funded HUD 202 program. On the health-care side, religiously-based nonprofits have been leaders in developing high-quality skilled nursing facilities which have expanded their services over the years. Through local examples, panelists will discuss how ideas about senior housing and care have changed over time, what works and what doesn’t, how older projects have adapted, and what future developments may look like.

Presentation: Materials & Surfaces of the Tugendhat House

DOCOMOMO US and the World Monuments Fund have organized a presentation by Ivo Hammer, chairman of the Tugendhat House International Committee. Dr. Hammer, a conservator and art historian, will speak on the restoration and conservation work carried out at the Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic, a masterwork of Mies van der Rohe (1928–1930). Completed within a year of Mies’ Barcelona Pavilion, the Tugendhat house shares many of the Pavilion’s luxe details: chrome finish cruciform columns, macassar veneer paneling, onyx wall panels, travertine flooring and furniture designed for the building by Mies. Sited on a dramatically sloping site, the Tugendhat House has the unusual feature of large panes of floor-to-ceiling cast glass that retract into a basement wall with the touch of a button.
The presentation is hosted by the Czech Center New York within its landmarked, and recently renovated headquarters, Bohemian National Hall (William Frohne, 1896). A reception will follow the presentation—presence of Czech beer highly probable.
Czech Center New York Bohemian Hall 321 East 73rd Street (between 1st and 2nd Ave)
RSVP. The lecture is free but RSVP is required. SPACE IS LIMITED.
Email bbrown@wmf.org by January 19 to reserve your place.
