The New York Chapter led a delegation to London for the Symposium

Investment), it was held at the Department of Trade & Industry
in London.
NY Chapter members Jonathan Wimpenny, Cynthia Fischer and Michael
Barry joined Norbert Young (McGraw Hill) and David Howell presented
their papers to a packed audience.

between the RIBA and the DTI in promoting UK architects and
the UK Building Industry.

Mapping of New York
Location: Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place at
Bleecker
Sponsored by: AIA NY International Committee
Description: Historically, cartography has been an intrinsic
ingredient of urban development, to the extent that certain
urban cultures have been defined essentially by their map
(as in the case of Manhattan's grid-like layout, or Amsterdam's
rhizomatic streets.) Jonathan Wimpenny will give a presentation
on the history of the mapping of New York City. This lecture
illustrates the cultural differences of the approach to surveying
Manhattan island from early discoveries, colonial habitation,
military defense, the growing metropolis through recent 3D
computer applications.

AIA RIBA-USA INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTS’ SYMPOSIUM - New
York
I would like thank all of you who generously donated time and
energy to making this event at the NYC Center for Architecture
such a success.
For the first time here in New York, it showed how the AIA and
RIBA-USA can energize the entire architecture community and
work towards a goal of mutual collaboration. Increasing the
opportunities of fellowship, it illustrated how both organizations
can work together to become more inclusive organizations and
which will embrace the growing diversity which is enriching
our profession.
The intention of both the RIBA and the AIA has always been that
of helping other colleagues to understand and resolve common
issues which confront us during our daily professional routine.
Thanks to you all, this conference extended this beyond our
immediate neighborhood to a global agenda. None of this would
have been possible however without the exchange of your experiences
and knowledge; we thank you for this generosity.
We now look forward to further collaborations between the AIA
and RIBA with the knowledge that without your hard work for
this event would have been a much more difficult task.
Jonathan Wimpenny AIA RIBA, Vice-President RIBA-USA, Chair NY
Chapter.
November 2002 - New York
Grimshaw in New York's SOHO
RIBA-USA heartily welcomes the opening of the new SOHO studio of Sir Nicholas Grimshaw CBE RA, at 100 Reade Street, Tribeca NY 10013.
Our New York Chapter reports that the November opening party was a huge success, thoroughly enjoyed by one and all.
Grimshaw joins a growing volume of hugely talented UK firms, like DEGW, who now have offices on this side of the pond.
Tell us about your own experience of being in or running a US practice and its focus (i.e. design, management, claims etc) in a way that we can share on our website.
